Wildlife abounds at Assateague Island! World renowned for its bird watching, with over 300 species of birds on the island. Assateague is also home to Sika and white tail deer. The Sika deer are smaller than the white tail deer and commonly seen on the island especially in the evening. The Assateague Refuge is also home to thousands of ducks and geese. Known as the black duck capital of the world, Assateague also is a home to many snow geese, canadian geese, and many different species of ducks. Also see below for some photos of blue heron and egrets!
This is a great blue heron - these are found throughout the marsh on Assateague and Chincoteague Island.
